Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State sophomore pitcher Sam Long took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and junior Sutter McLoughlin tied the WAC record with his 29th career save as the Hornets topped New Mexico State 1-0 on Saturday at John Smith Field.
Long allowed just one hit over eight innings with no walks and a career-high tying seven strikeouts. He improved to 5-0 this season and the Hornets are now 6-0 in his starts this year.
"I just came out confident and felt good from the start," Long said. "I felt strong and I was able to throw a lot of strikes in the beginning and get in a good rhythm."
McLoughlin got the save for the second consecutive day, and his 29th career save tied him with former Louisiana Tech closer Caleb Dudley for the all-time WAC record. He set down the Aggies in order in the ninth with two strikeouts to complete Sacramento State's third shutout of the season.
Sacramento State (15-10, 5-0 WAC) had a 9-1 advantage in hits but stranded nine runners on base as New Mexico State (4-19-1, 1-3-1 WAC) starter Riley Barr was able to allow just one run despite giving up nine hits and four walks over seven innings pitched. Reliever Matt Stein pitched a scoreless eighth to keep the visitors within a run.
The lone score in the game came in the fourth inning. Senior Scotty Burcham led off the inning with the walk and junior Nathan Lukes followed with a bloop single to left. A fielder's choice moved Burcham to third with one away, and junior Dane Fujinaka was able to bring in the run with a fielder's choice groundball to third.
The Aggies had a runner on base in the third, fourth, and fifth innings due to Hornet errors but Long was able to strand all three runners. Long hit the leadoff batter in the sixth inning but was again able to leave the runner on base.
He got the first out in the eighth inning before New Mexico State shortstop Daniel Kennon lined a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a double to break up the no-hitter. Kennon reached third with two outs after a wild pitch but became the fifth and final Aggie to be left on base.
Long's seven strikeouts equaled his career high set last season at Texas-Pan American. A freshman All-American last year, Long is now 13-2 overall in his Hornet career and is 6-0 in WAC games with a 1.73 ERA in 2015.
Hornet senior Kyle Moses went 2-for-4 with a double out of the leadoff spot, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, and freshman Bronson Grubbs had a 2-for-3 day with a double. With his single and a walk Lukes has now reached base in all 25 Sacramento State games this year while Moses has reached in 13 straight contests.
The Hornets go for their second consecutive series sweep to open WAC play with sophomore Justin Dillon to start on Sunday at noon.
