Box Score BELLEVUE, Wash. – Seattle U starter Skyler Genger allowed just one earned run over 7.2 innings and shortstop Griffin Andreychuk drove in two runs to lead the Redhawks to a 5-2 win over Sacramento State on Friday. The game was moved up from 5 p.m. to a 3 p.m. start due to forecasted rain.
Seattle U (14-15, 7-1 WAC) moved into first place in the league with its sixth straight WAC victory. Sacramento State (17-12, 6-2 WAC) trailed 3-0 early in the contest and got two runs back but could get no more.
Sophomore Justin Dillon was fantastic in relief for the visitors, throwing the last four innings of the game and totaling eight strikeouts while allowing just one run on three hits. Senior starter Brennan Leitao had two strikeouts himself and gave up four runs (three earned) over four innings while taking just his second loss of the season.
Genger gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts to even his season record at 4-4. Reliever Ky Dye gave up two hits in the ninth but had two strikeouts for his first save of the season.
Redhawk leadoff hitter Landon Cray opened the bottom of the first with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Sheldon Stober. Seattle U scored again in the second inning after loading the bases on three straight one-out singles and, after leftfielder Kyle Moses gunned down a runner at the plate, getting a two-run double off the bat of Andreychuk down the leftfield line.
Sacramento State got on the board in the fourth inning, getting two men aboard on a single from Moses and a walk drawn by junior Nathan Lukes. Freshman Vinny Esposito drove in Moses on a single to right to get a run back, but in the bottom of the fourth the home team scored again on a two-out Hornet throwing error.
The Redhawks got another run on a wild pitch in which the hitter struck out for the third out of the inning but reached with a runner coming in from third. The Hornets capitalized on two Redhawk errors in the eighth inning to make the score 5-2, and in the ninth inning brought the tying run to the plate with one away before Dye ended the game with consecutive strikeouts.
Moses was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Lukes was held hitless but reached on the walk to extend his season-long reached base streak to 29 games (Moses has reached in 17 straight contests). Junior Dane Fujinaka had a single to extend his career-best hitting streak to seven games and is now hitting .400 in WAC play.
Dalton Hurd went 3-for-4 with a run out of the nine spot to lead the Redhawks, who also had multi-hit games from Andreychuk, Cray, and Brian Olson. Seattle U had an 11-6 advantage in hits and left eight men on base while the Hornets stranded seven.
Sacramento State is 6-0 in Sam Long's six starts this year and will look to make it 7-0 when the sophomore takes the mound for the series finale at noon Saturday.
