BASEBALL FALLS TO #11 WASHINGTON IN SERIES FINALE

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. – Washington starter Chris Micheles and three relievers permitted just three hits and the 11th-ranked Huskies took the finale of a four-game series with the Hornets, 4-0, on Sunday.

After a 7-1 win on Friday Sacramento State (7-4) dropped a pair of close games in a doubleheader Saturday before the loss on Sunday. Washington (7-4) had 10 hits on Sunday but had just a 2-0 lead before adding two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Hornet senior Max Karnos, an all-WAC first team selection last year, made his season debut on Sunday, starting and pitching a scoreless first inning as he works his way back from injury. In a bullpen game seven Hornet relievers followed Karnos with just one, sophomore Alex Dentoni, throwing more than one inning.

Micheles went five innings for the Huskies, allowing just two hits and two walks with three strikeouts to earn his first win of the year. The three relievers the came after Micheles combined to allow just one hit and one walk over the last four innings of the game.

The game was scoreless into the third inning before Washington scored a one-out run on an RBI triple from MJ Hubbs. The Huskies would strand Hubbs at third and didn't score again until the sixth inning, when Washington had two infield singles, had both men move ahead on a passed ball, then scored the runner from third on a wild pitch.

Washington picked up two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as, with two outs, John Naff singled and moved to third on a Willie MacIver double before Jack Meggs brought in both runners with a single to center.

Junior Andrew McWilliam had two of the three Hornet hits, including a double in the fourth inning. Senior Trent Goodrich also singled in the eighth inning and PJ Floyd drew a leadoff walk in the ninth inning but neither runner advanced.

Sacramento State got scoreless relief appearances from Jonny Palsha, Michael Warning, Austin Ragsdale, and Tanner Olson while Ty Fox allowed just an unearned run. Dentoni pitched a scoreless seventh inning before running into trouble in the eighth.

After their first road trip of the season the Hornets return for two more home series. Sacramento State hosts Penn State for three games next week scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. next Saturday.
