FOLSOM, Calif. — Sacramento State opened the Big West Beach Volleyball Challenge on Friday by splitting a pair of matches at Livermore Community Park. The Hornets opened the day by beating CSU Bakersfield, 3-2, in the first round before dropping their second round matchup to sixth-ranked Cal Poly by a 5-0 score.
The three day event, which is being hosted by Sacramento State, runs today through Sunday and features all six teams in the Big West playing a round robin tournament against each other. Each team will play the other five teams once during tourney play. A total of 15 matches are being played, with the first six taking place today. Seven more matchups are on tap for tomorrow, including two at 9 a.m., two at noon, two at 3 p.m., and one at 6 p.m. For results from today's matches, as well as Saturday and Sunday's schedule, please click here to see the tournament home page.
The Hornets will play twice tomorrow, including 12 p.m. vs. third-ranked Hawai'i, and 3 p.m. vs. CSUN. After the first day of the event, both Hawai'i and Cal Poly are 2-0, the Hornets are 1-1, CSUN is 1-2 and CSU Bakersfield is 0-3. Long Beach State will begin play in the tournament tomorrow. Three of the teams at the tournament are ranked among the top six in the nation - third-ranked Hawai'i, fifth-ranked Long Beach State and sixth-ranked Cal Poly.
Against CSU Bakersfield (3-7), Sacramento State was able to clinch the match early with wins at Nos. 3, 4 and 5, to take a 3-0 lead. The Hornets (1-9) received wins against the Roadrunners from Ashtin Olin/Hannah Meadows at No. 3 (21-19, 21-15), Macey Hayden/Skyler Takeda at No. 4 (24-22, 19-21, 15-11) and Brigitte Murdock/Paige Swinney at No. 5 (17-21, 21-16, 15-6).
The Hornets used the same lineups in both matches today, which also included the tandems of Sarah Davis/Mikaela Nocetti at No. 1, and Kennedy Kurtz/Lana Brown at No. 2.
