BASEBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE SUNDAY AGAINST PACIFIC

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State Hornets (3-4) found themselves tied with the Pacific Tigers (7-1) early in Sunday's series finale, but late offense by the Tigers proved the difference in the 6-2 loss.

The first inning was a loud one as Pacific scored two runs on two hits while the Hornets scored one of their own on three hits. Matt Smith drove in Bronson Grubbs for the Hornets' first run of the game with a base hit to center field in the home half of the first.

Sacramento State tied things up in the fourth inning on a squeeze play. After Dawsen Bacho walked and advanced to third on a Michael Birch single, Evan Gibbons dropped a bunt in front of the plate. With the Tigers' catcher covering home, the pitcher was unable to make a play on the ball in time as Bacho slid in safely to even the score, 2-2.

That was it for the Hornets, however, as they managed just two hits over the game's final five frames.

Pacific reclaimed the lead with a run in the fifth before extending their lead with two more runs in the sixth. They added their final run of the afternoon in the eighth inning, making it a 6-2 ballgame.

Austin Roberts got the start for Sacramento State, but threw just two innings. He allowed two hits on two runs while striking out two.

Tanner Dalton did most of the work Sunday, throwing three innings out of the pen. The senior reliever scattered three hits and struck out four but was charged with his first loss of the year after allowing the go-ahead run in the fifth.

Stone Churby, Brady Rodriguez, Travis Martizia, Dash Dunham, and Nick Tabura all pitched Sunday for the Hornets, as well. Martizia went two innings while for Tabura, the scoreless ninth inning was his first appearance in a Hornets uniform.

Sacramento State won't have much time to dwell on the four-game series with Pacific as they are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at UC Davis. First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 2:30 pm and the game can be heard live online at HornetSports.com/Radio.
