Box Score 2 OREM, Utah – Sacramento State cruised to a comfortable 10-4 win in Sunday's game one before overcoming a five-run deficit late in game two, 11-7, to sweep Sunday's doubleheader and the series against Utah Valley.
For Sacramento State (14-5, 7-1 WAC), the doubleheader sweep was its second in the last three days and its fourth overall this season. The series sweep was the team's second this year but was its first four-game sweep.
Utah Valley (2-13, 0-4 WAC) has now lost 13 straight games after starting the season 2-0.
Because Sunday's doubleheader was not a previously scheduled doubleheader and was instead a rescheduling of Saturday's rain out, both games on Sunday remained a full nine innings.
Sacramento State struck first in game one, scoring three times in the third inning thanks to back-to-back two-out hits from Ryan Walstad and Dawsen Bacho. Walstad drove in two with a base hit through the right side before Bacho laced a run-scoring single to right.
Utah Valley countered with three of their own just moments later, but the Hornets broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning, thanks to a pair of home runs from Trevor Doyle and Steven Moretto.
Doyle's home run, his first of the year, was a two-run shot to right and put the Hornets ahead, 5-3. Five batters later, Moretto clobbered a three-run shot to left, putting the Hornets up further, 8-3. The blast was Moretto's fourth of the year, tied for the team lead.
Sacramento State added another in the sixth on a Walstad sacrifice fly before scoring their final run in the eighth on another sacrifice fly, this time from Matt Smith.
On the mound for Sunday's game one, Travis Adams (3-0) made his fifth start of the year and did not disappoint, earning his third win. Adams tossed seven innings for the third straight outing, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five.
Behind him, freshman Kevin Haynes allowed one run on one hit in the eighth before Cole Tremain threw a scoreless ninth to seal the game one victory.
The Hornets got off to a slow start in game two, going down in order in each of the first three innings before Matt Smith's two-out single in the fourth gave the team its first hit of the afternoon.
In that time, Utah Valley jumped out to a seemingly comfortable 5-0 lead. Much of that came in the fourth, when the Wolverines scored four times against Sacramento State starter Eli Saul and reliever Jack Zalasky.
Brady Rodriguez (3-0) took over in the fifth and silenced the Wolverines bats before they could do any more damage. Rodriguez, who made his team-leading ninth appearance on Sunday, threw 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out two. He earned his third win of the season and lowered his ERA to a team-best 1.32.
His effort bought Sacramento State enough time to come from behind yet again as the Hornets scored eight times in the seventh inning to turn a 5-0 deficit into an 8-5 lead.
The Hornets had eight hits in the inning, including a two-run home run off the bat of Keith Torres. Sacramento State also had help from two Utah Valley errors in the inning, including a dropped fly ball that extended the inning and an errant throw that allowed Dawsen Bacho to score on his own base hit to left field.
Sacramento State sent 13 men to the plate in the inning and, for the second time this season, a Hornet went 2-for-2 in the same inning as Bacho singled twice.
Smith added three more for Sacramento State in the eighth, hitting his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left. The runs proved more significant than not as Utah Valley clawed back for two of their own in the eighth against the normally shutdown Stone Churby.
Churby gave up his first earned runs of the season on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk before closing the door in the ninth and securing the doubleheader and series sweep.
After sweeping back-to-back doubleheaders, Sacramento State remained perfect this season in doubleheader games, going 8-0 in four twin bills. Including the 2019 season, and the 2019 WAC Tournament, the Hornets are an incredible 21-1 in 11 doubleheaders.
After three weeks and 12 games on the road, Sacramento State finally returns home this weekend for a four-game series against the visiting Dixie State Trailblazers. The trip to John Smith Field is the first for the Trailblazers, who are making their Div. I and Western Athletic Conference debut this season.
