BASEBALL DROPS SERIES OPENER, 6-0, FRIDAY NIGHT TO SEATTLE U

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For just the second time this year and the first time at home, Sacramento State did not score a run on Friday, falling to the visiting Seattle U Redhawks, 6-0, at John Smith Field.

Sacramento State (21-8, 13-4 WAC) managed just three hits in Friday's game while Seattle U (11-16, 5-8 WAC) piled up 16.

The Redhawks scored four of their runs against Sacramento State starter Scott Randall, both on two-run home runs off the bat of Seattle U's Justin Mazzone. The first came in the top of the first inning with one on and one out, though Randall limited the damage by striking out the next batter to end the inning.

Despite allowing multiple hits in multiple innings, Randall managed to hold the line at 2-0 for the next six innings. In the eighth, however, it was Mazzone once again taking Randal deep, another two-run shot with nobody out in the eighth.

Randall retired one more batter before Sacramento State went to the 'pen, finishing his night after 7.1 innings of work. The Redhawks continued to add on, scoring two more against Eli Saul in the top of the ninth to give them their six-run lead.

For Randall, Friday night's loss was his first of the season and was the team's first loss this year in a Randall start. He fell to a still impressive 5-1 with a 2.81 ERA. He threw 108 pitches on Friday, including an incredibly impressive 80 for strikes (74%). His 108 one shy of his season high 109 vs. New Mexico State a week ago.

While Randall did his part on the mound to keep Sacramento State close, the offense struggled to help him out, managing just three hits in the loss. Two of those hits belonged to shortstop Keith Torres, who finished 2-for-4.

His first hit came in the fifth, a perfect drag bunt down the line at third. While he had the throw beaten easily, Seattle U's third baseman made the throw anyway, sailing it down the right field line and allowing Torres to advance to third. Unfortunately, that's where he stared as Trevor Doyle grounded out softly to end the inning.

Torres added another, a line drive base hit to left, in the eight, but was erased one batter later on a 4-6-3 double play.

Sacramento State drew three walks and struck out just six times, but stranded six men on base and grounded into two double plays in Friday night's loss.

The shutout is just the second for the Hornets this season, the first a 5-0 loss on the road at Santa Clara back in early March. It is their first at home this year.

Fortunately, the Hornets won't have to think on it long as the team returns to action tomorrow afternoon at John Smith Field for a doubleheader against the Redhawks. First pitch for tomorrow's twin bill is set for 2 p.m. OT. Both games will stream live online on the WAC Digital Network with live stats available at HornetStats.com.
