Box Score 2 SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State's starters on Saturday combined to allow just one run over 12 innings, but the offensive struggled to get going as the Hornets failed to score a run in either of Saturday's two games, dropping both ends of their doubleheader to the visiting Seattle U Redhawks.
Sacramento State (21-10, 13-6 WAC) has lost three straight for the first time this year and the first time in nearly two years. Seattle U (13-16, 7-8 WAC), meanwhile, inches closer to .500 on the season with Saturday's wins.
Game one featured an excellent pitching matchup between Sacramento State's Travis Adams and Seattle U's Alex Jemal. The duo traded scoreless innings, with Jemal throwing six shutout, allowing six hits and striking out one. Adams was even better, throwing seven scoreless frames, scattering seven hits and two walks while striking out four.
For Adams, the seven-inning outing was his fourth this season and his second start of seven scoreless. He has thrown 47.2 innings this year and lowered his ERA to 3.21 with Saturday's outing.
Despite the strong starting effort, Adams was left with a no decision after his offense was unable to pick him up. The Hornets collected six hits in Saturday's game one despite put the ball in play in all but two at bats. Sacramento State drew one walk and struck out just once, but every ball the team hit seemed to find a Seattle U glove. The team never managed to move a runner past second.
Keith Torres and Dawsen Bacho each had two hits in Saturday's game one while Hunter Dorraugh drew the team's lone walk.
Saturday's game was the first of the year to feature the international extra innings rule. Scheduled for seven innings, Saturday's game one remained tied after seven. Seattle U led off the top of the eighth with a runner on second and finally broke through against Sacramento State reliever, Jack Zalasky.
The Redhawks tagged Zalasky for three runs – two earned – in the eighth. Despite loading the bases in their half of the frame, Sacramento State was unable to score as the game went final.
Game two looked much the same as game one as the Hornets continued to put the ball in play but managed to continuously find Seattle U gloves. Sacramento State had four hits in the game, including two more for Dawsen Bacho, who had four on the afternoon and saw his batting average climb to .265.
Despite putting the ball in play up and down the lineup, the Hornets again failed to advance a runner past second base.
On the mound for game two was the left-hander Brady Rodriguez, making his second straight start. Rodriguez appeared out of the bullpen 11 times for the Hornets before making his first start of the year last Sunday.
Today, Rodriguez pitched well enough to win yet again but instead was saddled with his first loss of the year. The left-hander allowed just one run on three hits over five solid innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
As they did in the first game, the Seattle U offense picked on the Hornets bullpen, scoring four runs – three earned – against reliever Travis Martizia in the sixth, going up 5-0 and securing the seven-inning win.
It's been a rare performance from Sacramento State so far this weekend. The Hornets had been shut out just once all season prior to the start of this weekend's action. Further, it has been nearly two years since the team last lost three in a row, a stretch from May 12 through 16 of the 2019 campaign.
Sacramento State won't have to wait long to snap the skid and start a different kind of streak as the Hornets and Redhawks are set to close out this four-game weekend series tomorrow, Sunday, April 18, at 1 pm at John Smith Field.
