Box Score LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Josh Rolling's solo shot with one out in the top of the ninth broke a four-all tie to bring Sacramento State all the way back from down four runs while Brady Rodriguez pitched two innings of shutout relief to earn his first win of the year, lifting the Hornets to a three-game sweep of No. 6 Long Beach State with a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Sacramento State continued its best start of the program's Division I era, moving to 7-0 on the year with the win. The Hornets swept the Dirtbags for the first time in the history of the series between the two teams after entering the weekend having won just five of the previous 32 meetings all time.
Long Beach State, which opened the year with a series win over No. 3-ranked and defending national champion Mississippi State on the road, fell to 2-4 overall on the season.
Rodriguez (1-0) did not allow a hit and worked around a pair of walks over the final two innings en route to the win, part of a bullpen effort that saw Sacramento State relievers finish 3-0, scattering seven hits and striking out seven while holding opposing hitters to a .206 average on the weekend.
Starter Colin Hunter, coming off a no-hitter in his first career start last weekend against Northern Illinois struck out seven and walked only one over six innings, battling back from a four-run second inning to limit Long Beach State to just two hits the rest of the way.
Right-hander Kevin Haynes allowed a hit in the seventh in his only inning of work before giving way to Rodriguez, who induced five ground ball outs — including a game-ending 6-4-3 double play after the Dirtbags threatened by putting two on with only one out in the ninth.
Two big hits staked Long Beach State to the second-inning lead as Tanner Carlson and Eddie Saldivar each laced two-run singles in the frame, giving the Dirtbags the 4-0 advantage. Long Beach State sent seven batters to the plate in the inning, five of them reaching on singles en route to the early lead.
The score remained that way until the seventh when the Hornets were able to claw one back as Carson Blatnick cashed in a lead-off walk to Colby Lunsford with a two-out single back through the box to make it 4-1.
Sacramento State continued to press with a big eighth inning as Jorge Bojorquez and Gunner Gouldsmith opened the inning with back-to-back singles to bring up Cesar Valero, who sent an 0-1 offering from Devereaux Harrison over the wall in left centerfield for his second home run of the weekend — and his team-best third of the year — to tie the game at four apiece.
After Long Beach State stranded a runner in the home half, Rolling wasted little time in giving his team the lead for good in the ninth, battling the count full before launching his first home run of the season of the wall in left off Harrison for a 5-4 lead the Hornets would not relinquish.
Rodriguez then returned to the mound and induced a ground ball for the first out before an error put a man on for the Dirtbags. A walk followed to put a pair on before another ground ball put an end to the day as Sacramento State was able to turn the 6-4-3 double play, completing the sweep.
Seven different Hornets accounted for hits on the day while all three winning runs were scored via the long ball on the weekend: Valero's solo shot in the top of the 10th in the opener, Steven Moretto's solo shot in the eighth in Saturday's game two, and Rolling's round tripper in the ninth on Sunday. Gunner Gouldsmith led all Sacramento State hitters on the weekend, batting .462 (6-for-13) with a pair of runs scored.
The Hornets close out a run of four-straight games away from home with a midweek clash at California on Tuesday (March 1) at 5 p.m., before returning to John Smith Field next weekend to open an eight-game homestand, beginning with four contests against Houston Baptist on March 4-6.
