Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. -- Josh Rolling finished with a pair of hits, including a double to help spark a Hornet rally, and Jorge Bojorquez slugged his first home run of the year to keep his hitting streak alive, but a big sixth inning by host California lifted the Golden Bears to a 6-2 mid-week victory over No. 20 Sacramento State on Tuesday evening at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif.
The loss ended the Hornets' record-setting season-opening winning streak at seven as they fell to 7-1 overall on the year. California improved to 5-3 with the victory, winning its second straight in the series.
Rolling logged his second multi-hit game of the season and extended his own hitting streak to three games, matching his career high for hits set in the series finale against Northern Illinois back on Feb. 20.
Bojorquez, meanwhile, extended his hitting streak to nine straight games dating back to last season with his sixth-inning blast — the fifth home run of his career.
Senior Steven Moretto knocked a seventh-inning single and Carson Blatnick added a single in the third for the only other Hornet hits. With his base hit, Moretto has now reached base safely in all eight games this year, hitting safely in five of those.
Both teams traded zeroes through the first three innings before Cal was able to break through with a pair in the fourth on a two-run double by Keshawn Ogans for the 2-0 lead.
A fly ball and a strikeout avoided further damage for Sacramento State, which stayed within striking distance until the sixth when the Hornets rallied for a pair to tie the game.
Rolling led-off the inning with a double to center and moved to third on a wild pitch before pitcher Tommy Hannan (1-0) battled back with a fly out and a strikeout, inching toward ending the inning. That brought up Bojorquez, who launched a 1-1 offering over the wall in right center, scoring Rolling ahead of him to tie the game at two apiece.
That deadlock didn't last long as California rallied to go ahead for good in the home half of the inning off reliever Noah Takacs (0-1) — one of nine Sacramento State pitchers on the night — who was making his first appearance of the season.
The Golden Bears put their first three hitters on base before giving up an out and scored the eventual winner on a walk to Dylan Beavers for the 3-2 lead. A ground ball scored another and Cole Elvis added a two-run single two batters later for the final 6-2 score.
The Hornets open an eight-game home stand this weekend at John Smith Field, welcoming in Houston Baptist for a four-game series on March 4-6, with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday (March 5). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
