Box Score 2 DAVIS, Calif. -- Sacramento State received complete game pitching efforts from Marissa Bertuccio and Lexie Webb, and the Hornets won both games on the second day of the Capital Classic on Saturday afternoon at LaRue Field.
After beating Dixie State, 7-2, the Hornets came back later in the day to knock off UC Davis, 2-1. Sacramento State (9-8) inched above the .500 mark for the first time this season, and improved to 3-0 at the three-day, three-team round robin Capital Classic. The Hornets finish off the tournament tomorrow at Shea Stadium against both Dixie State (9 a.m.) and UC Davis (2 p.m.).
Winners of six of their last seven games, the Hornets got dominant performances in the circle from their top two starting pitchers. Bertuccio improved to 5-1 with her complete game effort, limiting the Aggies to four hits and one unearned run with one walk and six strikeouts over seven innings. She held UC Davis hitless through 5 2/3 innings before an infield single broke up the no-hit bid. In the process, the right-hander now has a 1.58 ERA and .228 opponents batting average.
Webb, who is also known for her offensive exploits, showed what she could do in the circle against Dixie State (5-10). The right-hander allowed just five hits and two runs (one earned) with a walk and a strikeout over seven innings. Webb also connected on her team-high seventh home run of the season against Dixie State, a two-run shot in the fifth. Webb is batting .368, and averaging one home run every 8.1 at-bats.
In the win over UC Davis (6-9), catcher Amber Rodriguez had a huge day. That included a two-run homer in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. Those were the only runs the Hornets would score, and she was part of a big play to end the game. With one out in the seventh, and runners at first and second for the Aggies, Bertuccio struck out Reese Mattley, and Rodriguez fired to second base to pick off Bella Pahulu and end the game in exciting fashion.
In the Dixie State game, Carley Morfey hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first. Sacramento State had a season-high 13 hits in the game, including multi-hit games from Webb (3-for-4 with 2 runs, homer and 2 RBIs), Morfey (2-for-3 with 2 runs, a walk, homer and 3 RBIs), Alondra Mejia (2-for-4 with an RBI) and Samantha Parish (2-for-3 with two runs).
Parish had a hit in both games to extend her hitting streak to six games. Mejia and Rodriguez also had hits in both games.
Tomorrow is Kids Day at Shea Stadium, as kids 12-under will be admitted free to both games. In addition, kids can run the bases after the 2:00 p.m. game vs. UC Davis, and there will be an autograph session with the Sacramento State players after that game as well.
