MORETTO'S THREE HITS POWERS HORNETS IN SUNDAY'S SERIES FINALE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Senior Steven Moretto finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Trevor Doyle added a pair of hits, but No. 20 Sacramento State could not salvage a split of its series with visiting Houston Baptist as the Huskies rallied for a 4-1 victory over the Hornets on Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field.

Sacramento State fell to 8-4 overall with the defeat, while Houston Baptist took the final three games of the series to improve to 5-8 overall with the win.

The three hits for Moretto were a season high, falling just one shy of his career best of four set in 2018 against UC Santa Barbara. The Coquitlam, B.C., native doubled with a rocket down the left field line in the second, looped another two-bagger down the right field line in the fourth, and added a single back through the box in the eighth to complete his day.

Doyle finished with singles in the fifth and ninth, while Josh Rolling added a fourth-inning single and scored the Hornets' lone run on the day on a walk to Carson Blatnick that staked Sacramento State to the early 1-0 lead.

The Huskies answered with three in the fifth, taking the lead on a two-run single by Diego Davila and scoring another on an RBI fielder's choice by Brennen Bales two batters later. Houston Baptist added another in the sixth on Braden Sanford's run-scoring infield single for the final 4-1 advantage.

Starter Will Ripoll (1-1) earned the win for the Huskies, allowing just the one run while scattering four hits and striking out three. He worked around four walks on the day before giving way to Austin Spinney in the seventh, who surrendered just two hits in 2.2 innings of work. Miles Austin came on to pick up his first save of the year, striking out the potential tying run to nail down the win after the Hornets had put two runners on with two outs in the ninth.

Noah Takacs lasted 3.1 innings in the start for Sacramento State, allowing two hits and striking out three before running into trouble in the fourth. Tyler Stewart (1-1) entered in relief, getting a pop-up for the second out before Parker Edwards laced a single to the grass behind second base where Jorge Bojorquez laid out to make the stop, preventing the ball from going to the outfield.

Bojorquez then got to his feet and fired a strike to Blatnick at the plate, erasing Davila trying to score from second to keep the game scoreless.

Stewart was one of four relievers on the day for Sacramento State, as Wesley Harper, Kevin Haynes, and Jack Zalasky all saw work. Zalasky finished up the game, throwing the final three innings without allowing a hit and striking out a season-high four.

The Hornets have a quick turnaround, hosting Saint Mary's on Tuesday (March 8) at 4 p.m., before welcoming Dixie State to John Smith Field on March 11-13 in the team's Western Athletic Conference openers.
