BASEBALL WINS THIRD STRAIGHT WAC SERIES WITH 7-4 WIN OVER SEATTLE U IN SUNDAY FINALE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Dawsen Bacho capped off a huge weekend with a pair of home runs and six RBI, while Josh Rolling slugged another home run and collected three hits on the day as Sacramento State won its third straight Western Athletic Conference series with a 7-4 win over Seattle U on Saturday afternoon at John Smith Field.

In winning the finale, the Hornets improved to 17-18 overall and 9-9 in league play while claiming its first league series win at home in 2022. The Redhawks fell to 9-22 overall and 7-12 in conference with the loss.

Max Pettey (2-0) earned the win in relief of starter Noah Takacs for Sacramento State, striking out two and working around a pair of walks in 1.1 scoreless innings. Jack Zalasky entered in the seventh and nailed down his fourth save of the year, striking out six and allowing just one hit over the final three scoreless innings.

Takacs was touched for four runs on six hits while striking out three over the first 4.2 innings in the no decision.

Riley Sinclair, making his first start of the year in only his second appearance of the season, was stuck with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits over 1.2 innings of work. Nestor German pitched the rest of the way for Seattle U, allowing four runs on four hits, but striking out five, over 6.1 innings.

Bacho, who finished 5-for-8 with four runs scored in Friday's doubleheader, clubbed his second and third home runs of the season — both three-run shots — in the first and fourth innings around Rolling's solo shot in the third — his sixth of the year — to account for all of the Hornets' runs on the day.

It marked the third time in the last six games that a Hornet hitter has hit two home runs in a game (Cesar Valero did so twice in back-to-back games at New Mexico State on April 9-10), and marked the third consecutive game — and the 11th time in the last 13 — that Sacramento State has hit a home run.

A three-run home run in the fifth by Seattle U's Matt Boissoneault — his second of the day — turned a 7-1 Sacramento State lead into a three-run advantage, but Pettey and Zalasky shut the door the rest of the way. Pettey induced a fly ball to end the fifth and had the tying run at the plate in the sixth with two outs following a pair of walks, but got Shane Jamison to strike out swinging to end the threat.

Zalasky took the mound in the seventh and stranded another Redhawk runner, left two runners on in the eighth by striking out the side, and set Seattle U down in order in the ninth with a fly ball and pair of strikeouts to end the game.

Jorge Bojorquez and Jeffery Heard also collected hits on the day with singles in the second and seventh innings.

Sacramento State opens a run of five consecutive road contests on Tuesday (April 19) with a midweek contest at Pacific, before heading to St. George, Utah, for a three-game WAC series at Dixie State on April 22-24. The Trailblazers took 2-of-3 from the Hornets in the first conference series of the season back on March 11-13 at John Smith Field.
