Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Senior Keith Torres finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored, a pair of RBI, and a walk in his final plate appearance of the night that set a new school record, helping power a Sacramento State offense that banged out 17 hits and helped the Hornets to a midweek victory over host Pacific by a 13-6 score on Tuesday night at Klein Family Field.
The victory evened Sacramento State's record at 18-18 overall on the season, putting the Hornets at the .500 mark for the first time since they were 11-11 on March 26 following the second game of their series against conference rival Grand Canyon. The Tigers fell to 11-24 overall with the loss.
Tuesday's win also snapped a seven-game skid in midweek contests dating back to an 11-6 victory at Kansas back on April 27 of last season and avenged a 5-2 loss to Pacific earlier this year at John Smith Field. The 13 runs scored on Tuesday night were the most in a midweek win since a 15-7 triumph at UC Davis on April 15, 2014.
Sophomore right-hander Kevin Haynes (2-0) was credited with the win in relief for Sacramento State, allowing a run on a hit over two innings with a pair of strikeouts, after teammate Noah Lucchesi went the first two in the start, allowing a run on four hits and striking out a pair. Myles Meyer, the sixth Hornet pitcher on the night, closed out the game, allowing a hit and a walk, but striking out the side in the ninth to nail down the victory.
Caden Duke (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing the deciding three runs on a pair of hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning.
Torres' four hits were a career high as the Waipahu, Hawai'i, native had finished with three hits in a game on six other occasions. After being hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance, Torres reached on an infield singles in the fourth and fifth, lined a single down the line in left in the seventh, and beat out a bunt single in the eighth, before drawing his record-setting 136th career walk as part of a four-run ninth, breaking a tie with Will Fitzpatrick (1990-93).
Senior Steven Moretto finished with three hits — two of them going for doubles — and three runs scored, while Jorge Bojorquez, Cesar Valero, and Dawsen Bacho, each collected a pair of hits. Trevor Doyle drove in three runs, while five other Hornet hitters contributed RBI on the night, helping Sacramento State reach double figures for the seventh time this season and the third time in its last six games.
The two teams traded runs to start the game with the Tigers opening the scoring with a run in the first and the Hornets answering with a run in the third on an RBI double by Gunner Gouldsmith. A pair of runs in the fourth thanks to the first of four Pacific errors on the night staked Sacramento State to a 3-1 advantage, one that was shortlived as Jarron Silva slugged a two-run home run to tie the game at three apiece.
That's when the Hornets took control, scoring three runs in the fifth to take the lead for good with 10 of their 13 runs coming over the next five innings. Bacho led-off with a walk, moved to third on a Moretto double, and scored the eventual game-winner on a sacrifice fly by Doyle for the 4-3 advantage. Torres followed with a run-scoring infield single and, after a pitching change, Bojorquez drove home another with a single to center for a 6-3 lead.
Another error led to a seventh run in the seventh to extend the lead to four, but the Tigers made things interesting, scoring three times in their half of the inning to cut the deficit to a single run. However, that would be as close as Pacific would get as Doyle and Torres plated back-to-back runs in the eighth, and Rolling, Moretto, and Dylan McPhillips, followed with run scoring singles in the ninth for a six-run lead.
Doyle put the bow on the win with another sacrifice fly for the final 13-6 advantage.
With his two doubles, Moretto now has 51 for his career, moving him past Will Soto (2011-14) and into second place on the school's all-time list just six behind David Flores' (2005-08) all-time mark. Torres' three runs gave him 130 for his career, moving him into a tie with Scotty Burcham (2012-15) for fourth on the all-time list.
