Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Sophomore Jorge Bojorquez finished with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, while senior Steven Moretto drove in a pair of runs thanks to a single and a run-scoring ground ball, but host Dixie State scored of of its 12 runs in the final three innings on Sunday, posting a 12-2 seven-inning win to close out their three-game Western Athletic Conference series.
Having already clinched the series victory with wins in the first two games on Friday and Saturday, the loss dropped the Hornets to 20-19 overall and 11-10 in league play, putting an end to their four-game winning streak, while the Trailblazers improved to 16-22 overall and 10-11 in WAC contests. The two teams split the six-game season series with three wins apiece.
Freshman right-hander Colin Hunter (2-4) suffered the loss despite striking out seven batters on the day, charged with four runs on 10 hits over 4.2 innings of work. Ryan Hardman (3-1) pitched a complete game five-hitter for the win, allowing the two runs and striking out four over the seven innings.
Hunter's seven strikeouts were tied for his second-highest total of the year and the most since he struck out seven in a start at Utah Valley on April 3. The total was just two shy of his career high of nine set in his collegiate debut against Northern Illinois on Feb. 19.
After surrendering a run in the third that broke the scoreless deadlock, Sacramento State answered back with a run in the fourth to tie things up as Bojorquez doubled to lead-off the frame and scored when Moretto rolled a two-out single through the left side to make it 1-1.
Dixie State answered with a run in the home half of the fourth and plated a pair in the fifth before the Bojorquez-Moretto connection came through again for the Hornets, as the former again doubled to lead-off the inning, moved to third on a Dawsen Bacho ground ball, and scored two batters later when Moretto's ground ball to short produced only one out to make it 4-2.
From there on out, it was all Trailblazers as the home side scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and then closed out the game with a five-run seventh, eventually finishing with 17 hits on the day.
Carson Blatnick and Josh Walker also added hits on the day for Sacramento State.
The Hornets close out their five-game road trip on Tuesday (April 26) with a midweek clash at Saint Mary's at 3 p.m., before returning to John Smith Field to open a run of four straight at home beginning with a three-game series against conference rival California Baptist on April 29-May 1.
