BASEBALL'S POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT RUN COMES TO A CLOSE IN ARIZONA

Box Score

MESA, Ariz. — Gunner Gouldsmith finished with three hits and a trio of Hornets finished with RBI on the afternoon, but Sacramento State could not dig its way out of an early hole, falling to New Mexico State by a score of 7-3 to end its run at the 2022 Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz., on Friday night.

The loss ended the Hornets' postseason run as they finished 32-26 overall, posting their 10th consecutive season with 30-or-more victories — the only Division I program in the state of California to accomplish that feat.

The Aggies improved to 23-32 overall on the year and advanced to Saturday's championship game against either Grand Canyon or Abilene Christian at 6 p.m.

Friday's three-hit performance by Gouldsmith was his eighth multi-hit game of the year, matching his season-high three hits in game two of the series at Long Beach State back on Feb. 26.

Six other Hornets finished with hits on the night, including a double by Trevor Doyle, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Aggies, who scored the first three runs of the game and never looked back.

Dawsen Bacho put Sacramento State on the board with an RBI single to center in the third to plate Doyle and break up the shutout, while Doyle and Jorge Bojorquez also drove in runs with a ground ball in the fifth an a single in the seventh, respectively.

Noah Lucchesi (0-7) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out a pair over the first four innings, as the freshman was followed by Wesley Harper, who pitched the next three frames, Myles Meyer, and Jack Zalasky. Zalasky, who picked up a save in the win over San Houston State on Thursday, threw the final two shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
