SOFTBALL TAKES SERIES FROM WEBER STATE AFTER 5-1 WIN

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State snapped a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 5-1 win over Weber State on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

With the victory, the Hornets (23-14, 7-2) took two of three games from Weber State (8-25, 2-4). The two teams were selected as co-favorites in the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches poll, and faced each other in last year's Big Sky Tournament title game.

Sacramento State has now won all three Big Sky series it has played this year (2-1 over Northern Colorado; 3-0 over Montana), and sits all alone in first place in the conference standings. Only six Big Sky games remain in the regular season (road series at Portland State; home series vs. Idaho State).

In today's win, right-hander Marissa Bertuccio earned her 12th complete game victory, as she allowed eight hits without a walk and five strikeouts over seven innings. The reigning Big Sky Pitcher of the Year improved to 13-6 with a 1.61 ERA. In yesterday's doubleheader split, it was Bertuccio that tossed a four-hit shutout in the Hornets' 1-0 victory.

All five of the Hornets' run today were scored with two outs. The scoring was highlighted by an RBI-single from Gwen Ludwig in the second, and RBI-singles from Caroline Evans and Katie Marsh in the fifth. The Marsh and Evans run-scoring hits were part of a three-run fifth inning that snapped a 1-1 tie.

Sacramento State had nine hits, including two apiece from Ludwig, Marsh and Jada Walker. Evans, Carley Morfey and Lewa Day had the other Hornet knocks. The two teams combined to strand 14 runners on base, including eight for the Hornets and six for the Wildcats.

The Hornets are back in action next Friday-Saturday when they play a three-game road series at Portland State. Friday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m., followed by Saturday's single game at noon. The Vikings sit a game back of the Hornets in the Big Sky standings with a 6-3 league record.
