DAVIS, Calif. -- Sacramento State's offense continued to stay hot, accounting for 12 hits and three more home runs, on the way to a 10-2 thrashing of UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field.
The game was stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule. Sacramento State, which has now homered in seven straight games, improved to 11-8 this season. The Hornets went 2-0 this week against their rivals from Davis, including a 6-5 victory on Wednesday at home.
Sacramento State was playing for the fifth straight day, and the Hornet offense (mixed with some solid pitching from
Danyelle Leone) made sure the week ended on a high note. Eight Hornet starters had hits in the game, and six had at least one RBI. The Hornets put up crooked numbers in the first (3), third (2) and fifth (4) innings, and had little trouble against any of the three Aggie pitchers.
The Hornet offense has been on fire all season. Consider:
• .312 avg, .548 slg%, .393 ob%
• 26 home runs (6 for the opposition)
• 7 starters hitting above .300
• 5 starters above .330
• 5 players with 3+ homers
• Homered in 7 straight games
• 60 extra base hits
The Hornets already had three homers before the fourth inning today. Both
Katie Marsh and
Madison Evers-Lyles homered in the first, and
Caroline Evans added a blast in the third. All three are big parts of a Sacramento State attack that is averaging one home run every 19 at-bats.
Marsh,
Lafulafu Malepeai and
Malissa George each had multiple-hit games. Malepeai had a team-best three RBIs, and joins a list of five Sacramento State players with double figures in RBIs. That includes Evans who notched her 14th and 15th RBIs this season. The lefty, who also doubles as the Hornets' ace, is now hitting .471 (8-for-17) with runners in scoring position, and was not retired today (two-run homer and two walks).
Evers-Lyles, a true freshman, now has four home runs in 23 at-bats (one every 5.8 at-bats), and continues to impress with a ridiculous .870 slugging percentage. Another first-year Hornet, Malepeai, has an extra base hit in four straight games while improving her batting average to .381. Marsh is now hitting .415 and has a team-high nine multiple-hit games.
Leone (2-1) allowed just three hits and two runs with no walks and a pair of strikeouts over five innings. She had a shutdown inning every time the Hornets put up a crooked number, and faced just four batters over the minimum.
Sacramento State will now play seven of its next eight games away from home. That includes next week's slate of four games (three against top 25 teams). The Hornets will play at Saint Mary's on Tuesday at 2 p.m., followed by a stretch on Friday-Saturday that will see the team play fourth-ranked UCLA twice, and 23rd-ranked San Diego State once.
