GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Hornets earned wins in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice four competitions Saturday morning at the season-opening Sacramento State Invitational on Lake Natoma.

All five boats Sacramento State competed finished in first or second place, as the third varsity eight placed second. Today's regatta consisted of five 2,000 meter races, which included the varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, varsity four, and novice four.

A total of five teams were at the regatta, including the Hornets, Portland, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and Orange Coast College. The varsity four was raced under perfect conditions, while the wind picked up the final four races, which included 4-6 mph crossheads.

Despite racing with a crew that consists of just two seniors, the varsity eight finished with a winning time of 6:53.4, over four seconds faster than second-place Saint Mary's (6:57.5), and open water ahead of Portland (7:04.3), Santa Clara (7:28.3) and Orange Coast (7:43.5).

The second varsity eight won its race with a time of 7:07.8, beating second-place Saint Mary's (7:14.0) by over six seconds. The varsity four's winning time was 7:32.8, and the novice four's winning time was 8:03.0. The third varsity eight, which finished second behind Portland, raced to a 7:44.2.

Sacramento State will be back in action next weekend when it hosts the Hornet Invitational on Saturday.
