RETURNERS SPARK CROSS COUNTRY IN SEASON OPENING MEET

Teams led by Oliver and Martin at USF Invitational

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Tia Oliver and Ryan Martin had the fastest time for the Sacramento State women's and men's cross country teams at the USF Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Hornet women finished in sixth place while the men were seventh.

The women's team was first on the course at Golden Gate Park to start the season where Oliver completed the 6K course in 21:26.1. That time was nearly 19 seconds faster that her mark from a year ago and guided her to an 11th place finish overall.

Marina Lipary, who was making her cross country debut for the program, ranked second among Sacramento State runners and was 13th overall in 21:32.7. Sophia Dudley (19th, 22:57.4) and freshmen Keira Quigley (62nd, 22:57.4) and Myklin Cooper (66th, 23:05.9) completed the scorers for the team.

Host San Francisco edged Stanford for the team title. The Dons tallied 44 points to finish two points ahead of the Cardinal. The remainder of the top five was comprised of Cal (95), Nevada (154) and UC Davis (157).

The top four finishers for the men's team were returners from a year ago. Martin ran the 8K course in 25:09.0 to place 16th overall. Brandon Moreno crossed the line 2.1 seconds after Martin and landed just outside the top 20 in 21st place.

Koby Sperandeo (46th, 25:32.4), Cooper Love (63rd, 26:00.4) and freshman Thomas Rasner (90th, 26:39.40) accounted for the other three times that counted towards the team total.

Like the women's race, San Francisco was able to defend its home turf to win the team title. The Dons had four of the top five collegiate finishers and totaled just 21 points. UC Davis was second with 87 while Cal was third at 103.

Sacramento State will have a week off before competing at the Kim Duyst Twilight Invitational in Turlock, Calif., on Sept. 13.
