MEN’S SOCCER SUFFERS 3-0 LOSS TO SANTA CLARA

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Visiting Santa Clara scored just over three minutes into the contest on Sunday, then added two more scores in the second half to hand Sacramento State a 3-0 defeat on a sweltering evening at Hornet Soccer Field.

The result moved the Hornets to 0-3-1 overall on the year while Santa Clara picked up its first win of the year in improving to 1-1-2 overall.

Capitalizing on the first shot on goal for the match, the Broncos were first on the board just 3:14 into Sunday's contest, but could not turn nine more shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes into another score. At the other end, Zac Giles had an opportunity turned away in the 12th minute and Vincent Padilla was mere inches away from the equalizer as his attempts was pushed off the left post by the Santa Clara keeper.

The Broncos made it a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute, then capped the scoring with another in the 84th for the final tally. Santa Clara finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots, putting nine on frame to three for Sacramento State.

Giles led the way with four shot attempts for the Hornets, putting two on frame, while Lucas Bost stopped five shots between the pipes.

Sacramento State continues its season-opening trend of Thursday road matches and Sunday home contests for the third consecutive week, traveling to Utah Valley for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 4, before coming home to host San Jose State in the second half of a doubleheader with the women's team on Sept. 7 at 3 p.m.
