SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Sacramento State freshman goalkeeper
Cynthia Waller finished with a career-high eight saves on a busy day between the pipes, but host UC Santa Barbara was able to push across a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over the Hornets on Sunday afternoon at Harder Stadium.
Sacramento State, limited to five shots on the day, fell to 4-5 overall, while the homestanding Gauchos won their sixth consecutive match to improve to 7-1-1 overall.
Making her third start of the season, Waller's eight saves were just one shy of her entire season total entering Sunday's contest and were tied for the second-most by a Hornet keeper in a match this season.
However, UC Santa Barbara was able to find a couple holes for the only two scores of the match. The first was a well-struck header flicked perfectly to the upper right corner off a corner kick in the 12th minute, while the Gauchos added another in the 74th minute as Sacramento State was unable to clear a ball in the box that was fired home to the right side from the top of the 18 for the final score.
The Gauchos finished with a 22-5 shot advantage in the match, putting 10 of those attempts on frame.
Lexi Schroeder finished with a pair of attempts for the Hornets, forcing the only save of the match from the UCSB keeper in the 47th minute.
Sacramento State closes out non-conference play this week, hosting Causeway rival UC Davis on Thursday (Sept. 18) at 3 p.m. at Hornet Soccer Field.
