SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --
Saskia Raab,
Katie Marsh and
Madison Evers-Lyles each had multiple hits, and
Alexa Ortiz tossed a complete game to lead Sacramento State to a 6-1 victory at Cal Poly.
The victory was the second of the season against Cal Poly, which included a 5-2 win at home on Feb. 7. Today's game also marked the opener of the Mustang Classic, a three-day tournament hosted by Cal Poly. The Hornets and Mustangs were supposed to play a doubleheader today, but rain forced a schedule change to one game.
Sacramento State improved to 9-2 overall, and the Hornets have won four straight. The 9-2 record is the program's best mark after 11 games since the 1995 team began the season 10-1.Â
In addition, the Hornets were playing their sixth straight game away from home, and the team is 5-1 during that stretch. As part of tournament play, the Hornets will play twice tomorrow, and once more on Saturday.
The Hornets scored once in the first, twice in the third, once in the sixth and two more in the seventh to finish off a 6-run, 9-hit attack. A Raab ground ball scored
Lafulafu Malepeai in the first, and consecutive RBI-single singles from Marsh and Evers-Lyles accounted for the runs in the third.
After the Mustangs scored a run in the third to chop the deficit to 3-1, the Hornets got a Malepeai RBI-single in the sixth, and a two-run homer from Evers-Lyles in the seventh. The round tripper for Evers-Lyles was her second of the season.Â
That was more than run support for Ortiz (3-1), who was dominant yet again. In seven innings, she allowed just two hits and a run with six strikeouts. The right-hander has now allowed a run or less in five of her six appearances.
Malepeai,
Hailee Bustos and
Ava Medellin also had hits for the Hornets. Marsh improved her hitting streak to six games, while both Raab and Evers-Lyles have five-gamers.
Sacramento State is back tomorrow for matchups vs. Manhattan at 9:30 a.m., and San Jose State at 2:30 p.m. The Hornets conclude the tournament on Saturday vs. Pacific at 9:30 a.m.
