SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State's
Alexa Ortiz tossed a one-hit shutout to highlight the Hornets' 3-0 win over Saint Mary's on the second day of the NorCal Kickoff on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
Ortiz was perfect through four innings until issuing a leadoff walk in the fifth. The junior right-hander struck out a career-high 11 batters, and did not allow a hit until a two-out infield single by Braxton Brown in the sixth. She faced just four batters over the minimum, and allowed just two walks to go with the 11 punch outs.
Sacramento State is now 3-0 overall, and 2-0 at the three-day tournament the Hornets are co-hosting with UC Davis. The Hornets are playing later today vs. Cal Poly, and conclude the tourney tomorrow vs. Colorado State at 9:30 a.m.
The Hornets scored a pair of runs in the second, and once in both the third and sixth innings. Sacramento State had six hits, including two from
Shannon Garcia, and one each from
Lafulafu Malepeai,
Madi Mendoza,
Malissa George and
Jenna Birch.
A Malepeai bases-loaded walk and Mendoza ground ball scoring George accounted for the team's first two runs. They tacked on another on a two-out, RBI-single from Garcia in the third, and an error allowing pinch runner
Faith Epperson to score in the sixth.
Ortiz, who earned the win in the opener at UC Davis, is now 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, which includes 16 strikeouts and just two hits allowed in 12.0 innings. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of both games.
Through three games, Sacramento State's pitching staff has a 0.33 ERA, which includes just one run and five hits allowed in 21.0 innings. Opponents are hitting just .071.
