EUGENE, Ore. -- Trailing, 5-0, in the fifth inning, Sacramento State stormed back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, and capped the win with three in the seventh to beat Oregon State, 7-6, on Saturday afternoon.
Sacramento State trailed, 6-4, heading into the seventh, but scored three times to produce their fifth walkoff win of the season. With one out in the seventh, the Hornets got three straight hits form
Lafulafu Malepeai,
Madi Mendoza and
Saskia Raab. The Mendoza shot was a double that just missed leaving the park.Â
The Mendoza double scored Malepeai, and the Hornets eventually pushed Mendoza to third and Raab to second with two outs.
Shannon Garcia, with the Hornets down to their last strike, connected on a hard-hit ground ball to second base that was booted by the Beaver infielder. That allowed both Raab and Mendoza to score, and the celebration was on.
Sacramento State is now 2-1 at the Jane Sanders Classic hosted by Oregon. Yesterday, Sacramento State beat Nevada, 9-7, only to barely lose to 18th-ranked Oregon, 7-6. The Hornets will play Oregon again later tonight, and Oregon State tomorrow morning.
The Hornets improved to 18-5 overall, and 9-0 on neutral fields. Sacramento State had lost seven straight to Oregon State, and beat the Beavers for the first time since the 1998 season.
Trailing, 5-0, in the fifth, the Hornets scored four unearned runs (all with two outs) in the bottom half. That included an error allowing
Mariah Avalos and
Karissa Avila to score, followed by an RBI-single from Mendoza and a single from
Madison Evers-Lyles that scored Mendoza.
Both Malepeai and Mendoza scored a pair of runs, and had a pair of hits. Mendoza added two RBIs. The duo is the top two hitters in Sacramento State's lineup. Raab, Evers-Lyles, Avila and Avalos had the other hits in Sacramento State's eight-hit attack.
Kennedie Bacon worked the first five innings, before
Danyelle Leone (3-0) worked two shutout innings of relief to get the win.
