Box Score 2 SACRAMENTO -- Junior right-hander Alyssa Nunez threw a six-hit shutout to help lead Sacramento State to a doubleheader split with UC Davis on Thursday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Aggies won the first game, 4-0, and the Hornets won the nightcap by a 6-0 score.
Today's games marked the first day of the Capital Classic, a tournament that will see Sacramento State host six games over four days. That includes a doubleheader on Friday vs. Santa Clara, and another twin bill on Sunday vs. Pacific. Both of those doubleheaders will begin at 11:30 a.m.
After the Hornets dropped the opener, it was Nunez that got the team back on track as she tossed a six-hit shutout while walking none and striking out a pair of batters. She needed just 89 pitches, and five of the six hits allowed were singles. UC Davis advanced only one runner past second base the entire way, and Nunez has now issued just one walk in 20.1 innings pitched this season.
The split allowed the Hornets to move their record to 4-9 while the Aggies are now 2-9.
The nightcap also saw the Sacramento State bats come alive after the team had been shut out in four straight games. The Hornets scored three times in the first, twice in the second and once more in the fourth while accumulating seven hits, two stolen bases and a pair of extra base hits.
Three batters into the first inning, the Hornets already had a 3-0 lead thanks to an Alexis Parish double, Brianna Bowers single, and Lewa Day followed with her third home run of the season, a no doubter over the left field wall. Day now has eight of the Hornets' 25 RBIs, and the sophomore also has a .667 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage.
An Aggie error allowed Kennedy Echols and Aliyah Robles to score in the second inning, as both players had hits and stolen bases during the frame. Sacramento State got its final run in the fourth when Parish's single up the middle scored Robles from third. Both Parish and Robles had two hits during the game while Day, Echols and Brianna Bowers also collected hits. The hit for Echols was the first of her collegiate career.
Nunez (1-1) got the win while UC Davis' Sarah Reineman (0-1) picked up the loss, allowing five hits and five runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings.
In the opener, UC Davis starter Kenedi Brown tossed a two-hit shutout while walking one and striking out 12 batters. She faced just four batters over the minimum and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Alondra Mejia had that fifth-inning triple, and she was one of just two Hornets that got past first base the entire game against Brown. The Hornets' other hit came on a Katie Vretzos one-out single in the seventh.
Both Megan Bower and Bella Pahulu homered for UC Davis, as Bower's shot to left field was a two-run blast in the first. Marissa Bertuccio (3-5) took the loss for the Hornets, allowing six hits with a season-best eight strikeouts over six innings. Kelsey Alcantara pitched an inning of shutout relief. The win for Brown (1-4) was her first of the season.
