Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Weber State's Amanda Sink and Kate Donaldson combined on a six-hit shutout as the Wildcats defeated Sacramento State, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The victory allowed the Wildcats to sweep the three-game series from the Hornets, the first time Sacramento State has been swept by a Big Sky Conference opponent at home since 2015. Entering the series, the Hornets and Wildcats were just two of three teams in the Big Sky to remain undefeated in conference play (Southern Utah was the other). In addition, Weber State and Sacramento State were selected first and second, respectively, in the Big Sky preseason coaches poll.
The Wildcats, who won a pair of one-run games yesterday including a 10-inning contest, improved to 16-12 overall and 6-0 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State had won six straight entering the series, but dropped to 12-18 and 6-3 in league play. Today marked the midway point of the conference season for the Hornets as they have three-game road sets remaining at Portland State and Southern Utah, and a three-game home series vs. Idaho State.
• Perhaps the biggest factor in the series was Sacramento State's inability to get the bit hit. The Hornets left at least 10 runners on base in all three games, and combined to strand 36 runners aboard during the series. Eight of those runners were stranded in the first four innings of today's game.
• Sink (2-2) worked the first four innings, allowing five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Sink was in trouble in every inning, but the Hornets could not break through. They left the bases loaded in the first, a runner aboard in the second, two more in the third, and two in the fourth. The fourth inning was the most painful as Sacramento State had the bases loaded with no outs.
• Donaldson earned her third save, and allowed just one hit in three innings or relief work.
• Of Sacramento State's six hits, three came from freshman Kennedy Echols. The shortstop had hits in the second, fourth and seventh innings. Alondra Mejia went 1-for-2 with a walk, and extended her hitting streak to six games. Alexis Parish and Rylee Gresham had the Hornets' other hits. During the series, Gresham was 6-for-12, Parish was 5-for-13 and Mejia 4-for-11 with a pair of walks.
• Marissa Bertuccio (9-10) took the loss for the Hornets, pitching the first three innings of the game. Freshman Kelsey Alcantara allowed just one run and four hits in four innings of relief.
• Weber State's Chloe Camarero and Ashlyn Visser, the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters, combined to go 6-for-8 today with a double and three RBIs. The Wildcats leadoff hitter, Mia Rushton, scored two of Weber State's four runs.
• Today was Cancer Awareness Day, and Skylar Mitchell's brother, Austin, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Austin is currently fighting non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and has been an inspiration to the team and many more.
• Sacramento State will now enjoy a bye week, and return to action on April 23-24 when they play a three-game series at Portland State.
