SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team started the 2025 season by recording a pair of victories and posting the highest score by a Hornet team in a season-opening meet in school history. Sacramento State downed UC Davis and UW-Oshkosh behind a total of 194.700 and claimed at least a share of the individual title in three of four events.
Â
The team's total bettered the mark of 194.475 which came in the 2017 season opener and was just the fourth time in school history that Sacramento State began a year with a score of 194-plus. UC Davis finished second at 193.525 while UW-Oshkosh was third at 191.175.
Â
The Hornets had a fantastic start to the meet, totaling 48.475 on vault in the first rotation.
Sarah Lutrel anchored the lineup with a 9.800 which tied for first place in the meet. She was joined in the top three by
Grace Gilman and
Rylin Zimmerman who each received a 9.725 to tie for third place. The team score was tied for the eighth-best in a season-opener in school history.
Â
Sacramento State took its first lead after the second rotation with the help of a 48.700 on bars. That score tied for second in program history to begin the year, trailing only a 48.875 against Cal State Fullerton to begin the 2001 season.
Hannah Sitzman, who was making her career debut in the lineup, won the event with a 9.850 Sitzman's score is only behind a 9.900 in a season-opener which was set by Wendy Baisdon in 2001.
Kara Houghton was second with a 9.800.
Â
The team's biggest separation came in the third rotation where it totaled 48.975 on beam. Sacramento State was able to overcome an early fall in the lineup to post four scores of at least 9.8 on the way to its second highest score in a season-opener.
Rylin Zimmerman won the individual title with a career-best 9.850 while Gilman, Lutrel and Houghton each scored 9.800 to tie for second place.
Â
The Hornets held on to their lead in the final rotation with a 48.550 on floor.
Olivia Schmitt, Houghton and Jones each scored 9.800 to lead the team and tie for second place in the meet. Schmitt's performance was her first in the lineup on floor since the season opening meet of the 2023 season.
Â
Sacramento State will return to The Nest next Sunday to welcome San Jose State at 2 p.m.
