GRANT WINS HIGH JUMP, EWELL SHATTERS OWN RECORD IN DAY 2 OF BIG SKY INDOORS

Three Hornets earn all-Big Sky honors during second day of the meet.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Miles Grant defended his title in the high jump, Zoe Ewell topped her school record in the 60 and the Sacramento State track and field team set six school top 10 marks during second day of the Big Sky Indoor Championships on Friday.
 
Grant highlighted the day with a victory in the high jump after clearing 7-01.00. Grant passed at the opening three bars and then entered the competition with a successful attempt at 6-08.25. He had just one miss on the way to 7-01.00 and then moved the bar to 7-3.25 which would have set the school record had he been successful. Grant was joined on the podium by freshman Eli Kaltreider who was third at 6-08.25.
 
The men also received points from Mason Mitchell in the long jump and Joshua Braun in the in the heptathlon. Mitchell earned all-Big Sky honors after finishing third in the long jump with a season best of 23-10.00. Braun closed the heptathlon with a career-best 4,438 points to place seventh. Braun started the day in ninth place but recorded a 60-hurdles time of 8.84, long jumped a season-best 20-08.50 and then ran the 1000 in 3:05.99 to move up the leaderboard.
 
The women scored points with Tamia Ramos, Audrey McElmurry and Jessi Barry in the long jump. Ramos placed fifth with a long of 19-04.00. McElmurry was seventh and had a 10-inch improvement on her season best with a leap of 18-11.75. Barry claimed the final scoring position with a mark of 18-10.00.
 
The Hornet women advanced seven runners into event finals on Saturday. Ava Fitzgerald started the streak with the fastest qualifying time (8.40) in the 60-hurdles. She will be joined by Eliana Coburn in the finals after Coburn ran 8.80 to claim the final berth.
 
In the 400, Tristian Campbell and Breija Stredic each punched their ticket. Campbell ran 54.71 to take nearly a quarter-second off her PR and now ranks third in school history. Stredic was seventh in the qualifying round after running 54.99.
 
The record-setting performance from Ewell came in the qualifying round of the 60. The senior topped her own school record which was set at last year's indoor championship and will take the top time into the finals. Ewell ran 7.43 during the day to better her own record of 7.50. Barry ranked second in the round and is now second in school history with a time of 7.44 for a significant improvement over her previous best of 7.52.
 
Campbell also advanced in the 200 in her first Big Sky Indoor Championships. The freshman set a PR and is now fifth in school history after running 24.22.
 
Zachary Winger ran the 60-hurdles for the first time during the indoor season and managed to set his PR and the fourth-fastest time in school history. Winger ran 7.94 to rank third in the qualifying round and take .07 seconds of his previous best.
 
Both the men's and women's distance medley relay teams scored as the men were sixth and the women seventh. The men's team completed the race in 10:18.73 for the ninth-fastest time in program history.
 
Other notables during the day included Brandon Moreno running 1:52.75 in his first collegiate 800 to move into fourth place in school history.  The team also saw PRs from R'kai Davis in the women's long jump (18-03.25). Hope Gordon in the women's weight throw (46-10.00), Fitzgerald in the 60 (7.73), and Truedell Minnieweather, Jr., in the 60 (6.94).
 
The Hornet men will enter the final day of the meet in third place with 21 points. Host Northern Arizona is first with 63 and is trailed by Montana State (51). NAU also leads the women's standings with 52 points while MSU (49.5) is second and Montana (38.5) is third. Sacramento State has 14 points through the first two days and sits in seventh place.
