WOMEN FINISH THIRD AT BIG SKY INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ewell, Fitzgerald each win individual events

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Zoe Ewell won the 60 and Ava Fitzgerald the 60-hurdles to help the Sacramento State women to a third place team finish at the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Northern Arizona. The Hornet men finished in sixth place.

Fitzgerald recorded the first win the 60-hurdles for a Hornet woman since 2013. The junior ran 8.41 seconds in the finals to win the event by .04 seconds. Fitzgerald is the eighth Sacramento State champion in the event at the Big Sky Indoors with all seven previously coming between 2006-13. Eliana Coburn also scored for the team in the event, placing seventh with a season-best 8.72 seconds.

Freshman Tristian Campbell followed by setting the school record in the 400 on the way to finishing fourth overall. Campbell ran 53.49 in the finals to take over a second off her PR (54.71) and blow past Dominique Whittington's school record of 53.91 which had stood since 2015. Campbell later added a seventh-place finish in the 200 with a time of 24.33. Her efforts in those races helped her earn co-Female Athlete of the Meet.

A night after breaking her own school record in the 60, Ewell did it again, running 7.39 in the finals. The senior has now set the school record in the 60 meters three times dating back to last season's Big Sky Indoor Championships. She also became just the second Hornet to win the 55/60 meter title joining Alicia Truesdale who did it in 2008. Jessi Barry was second in the 60 by running 7.46 to earn all-Big Sky honors.

Sacramento State also scored points in the women's running events from Breija Stredic and the 4x400 relay team. Stredic placed seventh in the 400 in 55.28. She ended the meet running leadoff on the 4x400 team and was joined by Campbell, Dominique Abbott and Emily Giddens. The quartet posted a time of 3:44.05 which ranks third in school history and was the fastest since 2015.

In the field events, the Hornets had two scorers in the women's triple jump and high jump. Audrey McElmurry had a huge PR in the triple jump to finish in second place behind a best of 40-11.50. The jump places her sixth in school history and was 20.5 inches beyond her previous career best. Tamia Ramos also earned all-conference honors in the event, finishing third in the triple jump with a long of 40-09.75.

Abby Sheets was fifth and Barry was sixth in the high jump. Both student-athletes cleared 5-07.25 but Sheets finished one spot higher based on number of attempts.

Zachary Winger and Kellan Quinley led the efforts for the Hornet men as each placed third. Winger, who was competing in the 60-hurdles for the first time this season in the meet, ran 7.93 seconds in the final to earn all-Big Sky accolades.

Quinley moved into sixth place in school history with a career best of 48-11.50. The jump was nearly a full foot longer than his previous best this season. Joshua Braun added a seventh-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 45-00.50.

The men's 4x400 team completed the scorers for the Hornets as they finished sixth in 3:16.56.

Host Northern Arizona won both team titles. The Lumberjacks women totaled 205 points and were followed in the top three by Montana State (132.5) and Sacramento State (78). In the men's standings, NAU had 188 points with Montana State (148) and Montana (69) completing the top three. Sacramento State finished the meet with 44 points.

The Hornets will start the outdoor season on Mar. 14-15 at the Aggie Open in Davis, Calif. The team will then host the Hornet Invitational on Mar. 21-22 and end the year with the Big Sky Outdoor Championships at Hornet Stadium on May 14-17.
