GRANT, QUINLEY WIN EVENTS TO START HORNET INVITATIONAL

Hornets set a pair of school top 10s on opening day of meet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State track and field teams started the two-day Hornet Invitational on Friday at Hornet Stadium. The Hornets picked up a pair of wins from Miles Grant and Kellan Quinley and also set a pair of school top 10s during the day.
 
The meet continues on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Sacramento State will also honor its 24 seniors prior to the meet at 9 a.m.
 
Women's Track Highlights
  • Marina Lipary cracked the school top 10 in the 5K in her first race with the Hornets. Lipary completed the race in 17:08.38 and now ranks 10th in school history.
  • Zoe Ewell led five Hornets who set PRs in the 200 by running 24.53 to finish in ninth place. Ewell's previous best in the outdoor 200 was 25.05. Others to set PRs in the 200 during the day was Ava Fitzgerald (24.72), Jayla Cigar-Dingle (24.80) Eliana Coburn (26.08) and Hollie Lewis (28.47).
  • Breija Stredic placed fourth in the 400-hurdles after running 1:00.08.
  • The Hornets had a pair of top-10 finishers in the women's 800 with both setting PRs. Dominique Abbott was seventh in 2:10.28 to take .63 seconds off her previous best. Lilly Escorcia was ninth in 2:12.66 for a 1.26 second improvement.
Men's Track Highlights
  • Zachary Winger had the highest individual finish for the Hornet men in the running events, placing seventh in the 400-hurdles in 53.96.
  • Nathan Rider set his PR in the 200 in 21.83. That time was .09 seconds faster than his previous best. Isaiah King shaved .51 seconds off his PR with a time of 21.95. Jameel McDaniels (22.34) and Kalil Powers (22.63) also set PRs in the race.
  • Aiden Maddison had a huge improvement in the 5K and just missed moving into the top 10 in school history. Maddison completed the race in 14:39.20 which was 13.41 seconds faster than his previous best and left him just 1.30 seconds shy of cracking the Hornet top 10.
Women's Field Highlights
  • The Hornets had four of the top 11 finishers in the triple jump. Tamia Ramos led the group by placing fourth with a jump of 40-07.50. Ramos' previous best was 40-00.50. Audrey McElmurry was seventh at 39-00.50, Jayla Flowers jumped 38-03.50 to place 10th and R'kai Davis was 11th at 38-02.75.
  • Leah Chavez finished in third place in the pole vault after a successful attempt at 11-01.00.
  • Jean Ikenaga set a PR in the hammer with a best of 145-11 for  a 4-foot, 9-inch improvement over last week.
Men's Field Highlights
  • Miles Grant won the invitational section of the high jump after clearing 6-11.50. Grant's mark sure punch his ticket to the NCAA West Preliminary. Eli Kaltreider placed sixth with a best of 6-05.50.
  • Kellan Quinley won the men's triple jump with a leap of 50-04.75. That distance was the fifth-best in school history and the longest since Jah Strange (51-03.75) in 2018.
