GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four each won gold medals in their respective grand finals on the second and final day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship on Sunday morning at Lake Natoma.
For the first time since Sacramento State began competing at WIRA's in 1995, the Hornets were able to win gold in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four grand finals. Each boat qualified for its grand final by placing first in heat racing yesterday.
The WIRA gold was the first for the Hornets' varsity eight since 2022, the second varsity won its first gold since 2023, and the varsity four its first since 2017.
The Hornets' varsity eight won its grand final with a 2,000 meter time of 6:40.71, the second varsity eight won its grand final with a time of 6:55.37, and the varsity four's winning time was 7:45.65. Sacramento State also competed a third varsity eight in the 2V8 race, and finished with a bronze medal.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday when the team travels to Lowell, Ore., to compete at the Dexter Invitational.
