GRANT'S REPEAT IN HIGH JUMP LEADS TRACK & FIELD IN THIRD DAY OF BIG SKY OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Hornets advance 11 into event finals and receive points from seven on Friday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State received points from seven student-athletes, won one event title; advanced 11 into finals and recorded three school top 10 marks during the third day of the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Hornet Stadium.

The meet will conclude on Saturday beginning with the men's hammer at 10 a.m. Running events will start at noon and will wrap up with the 4x400 relays at approximately 3:45 p.m.

Men's Field Highlights

  • Miles Grant claimed his second-straight Big Sky Outdoor title in the high jump and doubled during the indoor and outdoor season by winning a jump off. Grant and Montana's Patrick Kremer each cleared 6-07.50 but missed on all three attempts at 6-08.75. The bar was then dropped down to 6-08.25 where Grant cleared and Kremer missed. Grant became the 11th back-to-back champion in Big Sky outdoor history and the first for the Hornets since Emilio Hernandez in 2010 and 2011. Eli Kaltreider also scored for the team, placing sixth with a best of 6-05.50 for three points.
  • Mason Mitchell ended the night by finishing in second place in the long jump. Mitchell's best effort was a season-best 23-05.50 on his first of six jumps. That effort came after he was third at the Big Sky Indoor Championship and fourth at last year's outdoor meet.

Women's Field Highlights

  • Jessi Barry scored in the long jump with a best of 18-09.25 on their second attempt of the day.
  • Abby Sheets added a point in the javelin by placing eighth with a long 122-06.

Men's Track Highlights

  • Senior Zachary Winger advanced in both the 110- and 400-hurdles. Winger had the third-fastest time in 110H after running 14.14. He was also third in the prelims of the 400H with a career-best 52.80 which left him just outside the school top 10.
  • Brandon Moreno will also compete on Saturday in the finals of the 800. Moreno improved to fourth in school history with a time of 1:49.31 which took 0.48 seconds off his previous best and moved him up one position in the school record book.
  • Malachi Cox narrowly missed advancing to the finals as the last position needed to be decided by thousandths of a second. Cox's time of 47.980 left him .008 seconds out of the final.
  • Isaiah King ran 21.56 in the 200 to lead the team and set his personal best.

Women's Track Highlights

  • Zoe Ewell and Breija Stredic each advanced to the final in the women's 100. Ewell, who won the 60 at the Big Sky Indoor title, matched her career best with a time of 11.69 for the top mark of the day in the 100. Stredic ranked sixth in the preliminary after running 11.89.
  • Ewell also moved on in the 200 and will be seeded sixth in the finals behind a time of 24.38.
  • The Hornets will be represented by Tristian Campbell and Emily Giddens in the final of the 400. Campbell, a freshman, ran 54.58 which ranked fourth in the preliminary. Giddens claimed the final qualifying position after running 55.86.
  • Dominique Abbott recorded the fifth-fastest time in the 800 in school history and will move on to the finals in the event. Her time of 2:08.00 took .05 seconds off her previous best.
  • Ava Fitzgerald continued her dominant outdoor season by posting the fastest time in the 100-hurdles, winning her heat in 13.38. That time ranks second in program history and is just one-hundredth of a second behind Nancy Searcy's school record from 2007. Fitzgerald will be joined in the final by Elian Coburn who ran 14.01 a day after placing third in the heptathlon.
  • Stredic will double on Saturday as she also advanced in the 400-hurdles. The sophomore ran 58.70 which ranked her fourth in the field.
  • Tia Oliver began the day for the team by earning three points in the steeplechase after finishing sixth. Oliver ran 10:30.09.
  • Marina Lipary added the final points of the day with a seventh-place showing in the 10K. Competing at her first Big Sky Outdoor Championship, Lipary ran 35:37.49 to finish in seventh place and garner a pair of points.
