Track & Field

WOMEN FINISH FOURTH; MEN FIFTH AT BIG SKY OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Fitzgerald, Ramos win events during final day of meet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Ava Fitzgerald used a school-record breaking performance to win the 100-hurdles and Tamia Ramos and Audrey McElmurry finished 1-2 in the triple jump to lead the Hornet women during the final day of the Big Sky Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hornet Stadium.

Sacramento State finished fourth in the women's team standings while the Hornet men were fifth. Northern Arizona easily won both team titles.

WOMEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

  • Fitzgerald ran 13.34 in the finals to claim her first Big Sky 100H title. The junior won the race by .13 seconds and moved past Nancy Searcy in the school record book to claim the top spot. Searcy set the record of 13.37 at the NCAA West Preliminary in 2007. Fitzgerald joined a large list of Hornet women who have won the event but the first since 2013 when Sakya Bolton finished first to end a streak of eight consecutive wins by the team.
  • Eliana Coburn also set a PR in the race, running 13.84 to finish fifth overall.
  • Zoe Ewell scored in both the 100 and 200. Ewell finished fourth in the 100 in 11.92 seconds and was sixth in the 200 in 24.59.
  • Tristian Campbell was third in the 400 to earn all-Big Sky honors in her first Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Campbell moved into fourth place in school history and had the fastest 400 by a Hornet woman since Shilah Bedingfield in 2019. Emily Giddens also scored in the 400 by running 55.92 to place seventh.
  • Dominique Abbott was third in the 800 with a PR of 2:07.35. Abbott improved her fifth-place ranking in program history on her way to earning all-Big Sky honors.
  • Breija Stredic finished in second place in the 400-hurdles and was also seventh in the 100. Stredic ran 58.98 in the finals of the 400H and had a time of 12.03 in the 100.
  • The women's 4x400 relay team of Stredic, Ewelll, Giddens and Campbell finished in second place and set the school record in 3:38.22. The time moved the unit into 56th nationally and 24th in the NCAA West Region.

MEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

  • Zachary Winger was all-conference in a pair of events. The senior finished second in the 110-hurdles in 13.96 seconds. He returned about an hour later to finish third in the 400-hurdles behind a career best 52.77.
  • The team also received points from the 4x100 relay team of Isaiah King, Winger, Nathan Rider and Xavier Bruce which produced a season-best mark of 40.91.
  • Sacramento State closed the meet with a 4x400 relay time of 3:11.89 which helped move the team into fifth place in the overall standings.
  • Sophomore Brandon Moreno looked to have earned all-conference accolades after he crossed in third place in the men's 800. Moreno was in the lead for the first 750 meters of the race before being chased down near the finish line. In the process, he was ruled to have impeded a runner and was disqualified, erasing what would've been the fourth-fastest time in school history.

FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

  • Tamia Ramos was victorious in the triple jump and led a sweep of the top two spots with McElmurry. Ramos's best jump of 40-09.75 came on her third attempt and moved her into a tie for ninth place in school history. McElmurry jumped a PR of 40-01.25 on her final attempt. R'kai Davis also scored in the TJ, finishing in fifth place with a wind-aided leap of 39-06.75.
  • Jessi Barry and Abby Sheets each scored in the high jump. Barry cleared 5-06.50 before having to break from the event to run the 4x100 relay. When they returned, the bar had moved to heights and they were unable to record a make and settled for a fifth-place finish. Sheets cleared 5-03.25 to tie for sixth place.
  • The men also had a scorer in the triple jump with Kellan Quinley finishing in fourth place. Quinley held the lead after the first round after a jump of 49-04.50. That mark proved to be his longest of six attempts. He stayed in third place until the final round when Idaho's Shawn Twumasi Ampofo bettered him by one inch to take the final all-conference position.
