SEATTLE, Wash. — The Dempsey distance magic continued on Saturday for the Sacramento State track and field teams as the Hornets recorded four school top 10s in races over 800 meters and added another in the long jump at the University of Washington facility.
Â
The site, which has been home to nearly all of the school's indoor distance records, saw another topple when
Brandon Moreno bettered his own school record in the 800. The sophomore ran 4:07.47 to beat his previous best, which also came on the Dempsey track, by .78 seconds.
Ryan Martin moved into the top 10 in program history in the men's mile with a mark of 4:14.70 to place him ninth. Martin was competing in the indoor mile for the first time in his career and a day after running the second-fastest 5K in school history.
Â
The women also had a big day in the mile as four of the team's five entries set PRs during the day.
Tia Oliver led the way with a mark of 4:59.22 which placed her 10
th in the Hornet record book. Oliver lowered her career best by an incredible 22.24 seconds. A day earlier, Oliver moved into third place in school history in the 3K.
Â
Also setting personal bests in the event on Saturday was
Viviana Valenton (5:03.10),
Kate Sanders (5:04.16) and
Dakota Gibson 5:08.97.
Â
Jake Slade led a trio of Hornet men who recorded lifetime bests in the indoor 800. Slade ran 1:54.54 and is now eighth all-time at Sacramento State.
Logan Borg (1:54.05) and
Irven Hill (1:54.68) were close behind and also had their fastest times as a Hornet.
Â
Jessi Barry recorded a victory in the women's long jump for the highest finish by a Sacramento State athlete in any event over the two days of the UW Invitational. Barry's best of 19-03.50 came on her on fifth attempt and allowed her to win the competition by 2.25 inches. Barry also drew into a tie for sixth place in school history in the event while surpassing her previous best by 7.75 inches.
Â
Sacramento State will next compete at the Wolf Pack Classic on Feb. 7-8 in Reno, Nev. The meet will mark the team's return to the city for the first time in over a decade.
